Friedrich Matz (born October 13, 1843 in Lübeck , † December 30, 1874 in Berlin ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Life

After visiting the Katharineum in his hometown of Lübeck and graduating from high school in Easter 1863, Matz studied classical archeology and philology at the University of Bonn , especially with Otto Jahn . In a work published in 1867, with which he received his doctorate in Bonn, he dealt with the description of pictures by the ancient author Philostratus . During a study visit to Italy and Greece from 1867 to 1870, Matz mainly turned to the ancient sarcophagi , the systematic processing of which was entrusted to him by the German Archaeological Institute in 1870 ( the ancient sarcophagus reliefs ). After his habilitation in Göttingen in 1870, Matz became an associate professor in Halle in 1873 . In the following spring of 1874 he moved to the University of Berlin as a professor , where he was only able to work for nine months until his untimely death. He was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Berlin. His grave has been dedicated to the city of Berlin as an honor grave since 1978 .

In addition to the sarcophagi, Matz also dealt with ancient works of art in modern collections, particularly in Great Britain.
