Manfred Oppermann (archaeologist)

Manfred Oppermann (born July 14, 1941 in Halberstadt ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Life

Oppermann studied classical archeology at the University of Sofia from 1965 to 1968 , where he received his doctorate in 1971. In 1978 he received his habilitation thesis at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg with a thesis on the development of society and the visual arts in the Roman provinces of Thracia and Moesia inferior from the 1st century to the 2nd half of the 3rd century . He was appointed Professor of Classical Archeology in 1983 and then worked in the Oriental and Classical Studies section of the University of Halle. From 1994 until his retirement at the end of June 2006, Oppermann was director of the University's Archaeological Museum , and he was succeeded by Stefan Lehmann in the 2007 summer semester . In May 2007 Oppermann was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Ovidius University of Constan unda and in July 2008 he was elected a foreign member by the general assembly of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia.

Oppermann presented works on Greek and Roman relief art, including the Roman imperial reliefs. He stood out in particular through his work on the art and culture of the Balkan Peninsula, for example with his important synthesis on the history of the West Pontic Poleis. Oppermann took part in international and interdisciplinary research projects, particularly with the exploration of Thrace : together with Zlatozara Goceva , he presented several volumes of the series Corpus Cultus Equitis Thracii and devoted an intensive study to the cult of the Thracian rider .
