Life

Hermann von Rohden, son of the mission inspector Ludwig von Rohden (1815-1889) and his wife Luise (née Wachsmuth), lived with his uncle in Lübeck after the death of his mother in 1857 and attended the Grautorff elementary school there, and from 1862 the Katharineum High School . In 1912, like all former Katharineers active in the Franco-Prussian War , a monument was set up by the wine merchant Gerhard von Melle in 1912 through a foundation in the form of a window in the auditorium .

In the winter semester of 1871/72 he began studying Classical Philology and History at the University of Bonn . He spent two semesters (1873/74) at the University of Leipzig . He turned to archeology through the influence of Bonn professors Anton Springer (art history), Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz (classical archeology) and Leipzig private lecturer Adolf Philippi (philology and art history). Among the philologists, he was particularly influenced by Franz Bücheler and Hermann Usener , who accepted Rohden as a full member of the Philological Seminar.

On November 27, 1875 Hermann von Rohden was with the dissertation De mundi miraculis quaestiones selectae doctorate . Gustav Heylbut , Rudolph Ballheimer and August Fresenius acted as opponents . After a short period in teaching in Strasbourg , von Rohden received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute for 1876/1877 , which enabled him to stay in Italy, Greece and Asia Minor. Based on the findings that he published on his trip, the scholarship was extended to the following year.

After his return to Germany, Rohden worked as a high school teacher in Hagenau (Alsace), where he was appointed senior teacher and in 1899 high school professor. He remained scientifically active until his death and wrote anthologies, essays and lexicon articles. He remained associated with the German Archaeological Institute as a corresponding, later full member.

From 1905 Hermann von Rohden was a member of the Wingolf Association Argentina Strasbourg and from 1906 of the Göttingen Wingolf .

His (half) brothers were the ancient historian and high school teacher Paul von Rohden and the theologian Gustav von Rohden .
