Von Melle came from an old Lübeck family.

Werner von Melle lived in the Hanseatic city as early as 1392 . The von Melles came from Westphalia , probably from Melle , and were supposed to provide a number of important men in the city.

Probably the best-known among them was probably Jacob von Melle . At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries he worked as the main pastor and senior at St. Marien . In 1713 he published the book “Thorough Message from the Kayserl. Freyen and the Imperial City of Lübeck ”. This was to become a standard work on the history and topography of Lübeck .

One of his grandchildren became the oldest pastor at St. Lorenz and the grandfather of Senator Emil Possehl .

With the Lübeck constitutional reform of 1848, the guild requirement was lifted.

The resulting economic optimism was evident in many start-ups. Hermann Friedrich von Melle, son of the St. Lorenz pastor, "established" himself on April 15, 1853 in the Beckergrube with the establishment of the company "HF von Melle" as a wine wholesaler .

In addition to the Lübeck line, the Hamburg line must also be mentioned. Its most famous personality, Werner von Melle , became Hamburg's mayor and founded the Hamburg University .

career

Melle first attended the Großheim School and then the Katharineum . He was to remain closely associated with this school throughout his life. As a visible sign of this bond, he dedicated a large colored window with the coats of arms or initials of all Katharineers active in the war of 1870.

Since his father did not let him study, which Melle always regretted later, he received a commercial apprenticeship. Like other young merchants , he took a longer stay abroad after completing his training. In Libau he broadened his view and got to know foreign conditions. When his father suddenly died in 1878, he was recalled to work in his father's wine wholesaler. Like his ancestors, he was also involved in all charitable and public affairs where his participation was required of him.

From his grandfather Melle had inherited an interest in historical and especially patrician matters. He followed the questions of the day and their further development and belonged to the Hanseatic History Association . Since 1891 he was also a member of the Lübeck History Society .

On December 30, 1891 , the Senate elected Melle to replace the merchant A. Fr. Böse, who was leaving his office after eight years, as his successor as the bourgeois deputy and district administrator at the poor institution. On November 25, 1891, he was elected to the administration of the institution.

In 1905 the Senate elected Melle to replace the resigning GE Tegtmeyer as the bourgeois deputy at the insane asylum .

FA Bernstein, civil deputy in the authority for housing maintenance, died in 1906. Melle was elected as his successor.

Melle was elected as the successor to JA Hahn, who left office in the Central Poor Deputation in 1907.

In addition to the aforementioned, Melle belonged to the administration of the infirmary as well as to several wills and foundations .

Melle had also acted several times as a member of the board of directors of the cathedral parish . As a visible sign of his affiliation with her, the foundation of a silver baptismal font was emphasized.

family

Melle had married Luise, a born biker.

After his death, Joachim and Werner became the third von Melle generation to run the wine store in 1921. They led the company through the often turbulent times. The old Lübeck gabled house of the company in the Beckergrube is today a symbol of the company's traditional principles.
