Gerhard Schmidt (archaeologist)

Gerhard Schmidt (* 1928 ; † 1987 ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Gerhard Schmidt was with a study on 1,962 Cyprian sculptures from the Heraion of Samos at Ernst Buschor at the University of Munich doctorate . The doctorate was based on his participation in the excavations on Samos , which were directed by his teacher Buschor from 1925 to 1939. In 1963/64 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . From 1969 until his death he was initially employed in the editorial department of the Athens department of the German Archaeological Institute , then in the headquarters in Berlin . In 1973 he led the excavation in the Eupalinos tunnel in Samos for a short time under Ulf Jantzen .
