Hans von Schoenebeck
Hans-Ulrich von Schoenebeck (born December 19, 1904 , † August 17, 1944 in Normandy ) was a German classical archaeologist .
Hans von Schoenebeck was an academic student of Gerhart Rodenwaldt . Among other things, he researched the Galerius Arch in Thessaloniki , where he worked closely with the building researcher Heinz Johannes . At the beginning of the third millennium, his observations, which he recorded in his unpublished diary, serve as an important source for further archaeological and religious-historical research into the city. Schoenebeck also gave the historically and archaeologically important interpretation that a fallen bearded Roman on a rock relief in Taq-e Bostan shows Emperor Julian , which makes the relief an important historical source. From 1941 to July 1942 he was in charge of the art protection department in Greece , which was subordinate to the Army High Command, Quartermaster General Eduard Wagner . In 1943/44 he was a lecturer at the Friedrich Wilhelms University . Schoenebeck died as a soldier in Normandy in 1944.
