Peter Gercke

Peter Gercke (born September 22, 1938 in Hamburg ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Peter Gercke studied Classical Archeology, Greek Studies and Philosophy at the Universities of Marburg and Hamburg . It was in 1966 with the work " Satyrs of Praxiteles " for Ulf Jantzen in Hamburg doctorate . He then completed a museum traineeship and was a consultant at the German Archaeological Institute in Athens from 1968 to 1971 . With a grant from the German Research Foundation , he conducted research in Athens and Nafplio . Since 1976 he has held visiting professorships and lectureships at Indiana University Bloomington , the University of Marburg and the University of Kassel . In 1973 Gercke became custodian of the Kassel antique collection in Wilhelmshöhe Palace . In 1982 he was made an honorary professor. From 1983 to 2003 he was deputy director of the Staatliche Museen Kassel . From 1986 to 2018 he was chairman of the Hessian Society for Art and Science .

Peter Gercke took part in excavations in Italy , Greece and Turkey . He curated numerous exhibitions and published numerous publications on classical archeology and the reception of antiquities.
