Conrad Steinbrecht (born September 22, 1849 in Tangermünde ; † July 3, 1923 in Marienburg ) was a German architect , Prussian construction officer and monument conservator who has made great contributions to the preservation of the castles of the Teutonic Order . He was called the savior of the " Marienburg ". A memorial plaque still reminds of him today.

Life

Steinbrecht attended the grammar school of the monastery Our Dear Women in Magdeburg . After graduating from high school, he was a volunteer in the Franco-German War . From 1871 to 1874 he studied architecture at the Berlin Building Academy . Study trips to Italy and Greece followed. In 1877 he took part in the excavations in Olympia to support his teacher from the Bauakademie, the architect Friedrich Adler . In 1875 he was appointed government building supervisor ( trainee lawyer ) and in 1879 government building master ( assessor ). In 1880 Steinbrecht worked in the Prussian Ministry of Culture in Berlin. There he dealt with the revival of the brick building. His task was to study, sketch and describe the remains of the buildings of the Teutonic Order in East and West Prussia . After that, the renovation work he led began. The aim of his work was a reconstruction in its original form or rebuilding. This work lasted over 20 years at Marienburg, until the Hochschloss in 1896, the guest chambers in 1900, the Grand Commandery in 1906 , the Firmarie in 1913 , the Great Remter renewed in 1917 , parallel to the outdoor area and the Herren- Dansker until 1918. Steinbrecht also added meaningfully the inventory and furniture, for example by buying up Bleil's collection of weapons or by imitating medieval frescoes . But other castles were also documented and restored by him, such as Lochstädt Castle .
