Wolfgang Reichel (archaeologist)

Wolfgang Reichel (born May 2, 1858 in Vienna , † December 18, 1900 in Athens ) was an Austrian archaeologist .

Live and act

Reichel studied in Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1890 and completed his habilitation in 1894 . From 1898 he was secretary at the Athens branch of the Austrian Archaeological Institute . Together with the epigrapher Adolf Wilhelm he carried out the excavations of the Artemis sanctuary of Lousoi in 1898/1899 and prepared their publication. His main interest was the early Greek period and the Mycenaean culture . Reichel was married to Else Benndorf, Otto Benndorf's older daughter . He is buried in the 1st cemetery in Athens.

Wolfgang Reichel had been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1893 .
