Johann Jakob Bernoulli (born January 18, 1831 in Basel ; † July 22, 1913 there ) was a Swiss classical archaeologist from the family of scholars Bernoulli .

Johann Jakob Bernoulli studied German at the University of Basel . He later moved to the University of Berlin to study classical studies. He successfully completed this course in 1854 with a doctorate . He then traveled to Rome and studied the museums of Italy and Greece. Back in Basel, Bernoulli worked as a teacher at various grammar schools and the Basel vocational school .

During this time, the Basel councilor Wilhelm Vischer appointed him to the commission of his sculpture hall, which was founded in 1849 . During the next few years, Bernoulli also worked as a private lecturer at the University of Basel. There he was in 1859 for "fan of classical philology and archeology and ancient history" habilitation . In 1874 he was appointed associate professor . In 1895 Bernoulli was appointed full professor due to his extraordinary achievements, but three years later asked to be released from teaching and the obligations associated with the position in order to be able to complete his research. From 1859 to 1898 he taught classical archeology on a voluntary basis at the university, as the subject was only spun off from Jacob Burckhardt's overall art history chair in 1898 and has since become an independent discipline. The two chairs of classical studies, on the other hand, were strictly assigned to Greek and Latin philology . In his lectures and exercises on Classical Archeology, Bernoulli placed the emphasis on Greek sculpture, and one of his achievements was the move of the sculpture hall to the Kunsthalle Basel in 1887.

Bernoulli, who was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute from 1892, became particularly important in the field of Greek and Roman iconography . His multi-volume works on this topic are still part of the basic literature today.
