Siegfried Loeschcke

Siegfried Loeschcke (born May 16, 1883 in Dorpat ; † 1956 ) was a German provincial Roman archaeologist .

Life

Siegfried Loeschcke was the son of the classical archaeologist Georg Loeschcke and his first wife Katharina Jäger. He had a sister and five brothers, including the theologian Gerhard Loeschcke (1880-1912), the pathologist Hermann Loeschcke (1882-1948) and the painter Reinhard Loeschcke (1887-1920).

In 1909 he was with his father at the University of Bonn with the work ceramic finds in Haltern. A PhD contribution to the history of Augustan culture in Germany . Loeschcke took part in an expedition by Ernst von Sieglins to Alexandria . From 1910 to 1912 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . During this trip he acquired various artifacts for the Berlin university collection on behalf of his father, which were paid for from his appointment funds. At an early age, unlike his father, he moved away from classical archeology towards provincial Roman archeology. After the First World War he came to the Landesmuseum Trier , where he became a department director. He was an honorary member of the Society for Archeology and Homeland Care Haltern am See . Loeschcke made a lasting contribution to provincial Roman archeology in Germany and especially to Trier .
