Scalr is a web-based , open source , cloud computing platform for managing the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud . The project was initiated by Intridea in April 2008 in order to provide an easily scalable infrastructure for MediaPlug (a platform for the exchange of media content). The project is hosted on Google Code today . Scalr offers, according to a test report, "90% of the functionality for 10% of the price" of the main competitor RightScale .
Scalr has received positive reviews since the source code was released under the GNU General Public License (version 2). This includes reviews from TechCrunch, HighScalability, the official AWS blog, and CNet, as well as private blogs.
Scalr has been available as a monthly paid service since mid-2008.
