Wilhelm von Massow (archaeologist)

Wilhelm von Massow (born March 12, 1891 in Posen , † April 21, 1949 in Trier ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Wilhelm von Massow began studying at the University of Jena in 1910 . After only a year he went to Bonn and studied the subjects of Classical Archeology, Ancient History , Art History and Classical Philology . From 1912 until the outbreak of World War I, he continued his studies in Berlin. In the war he was seriously wounded near Lodz and then worked as an educator in the main cadet institute in Lichterfelde. In 1919 he was able to continue his studies in Leipzig and received his doctorate in 1922 with Franz Studniczka with a thesis on the Kypseloslade . The Roman-Germanic Commission entrusted him with the processing of the Neumagen monuments , which he completed in autumn 1923. In 1923/24 he traveled with the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute , from 1924 to 1925 he worked at the Athens Department of the German Archaeological Institute. Then he was hired by Theodor Wiegand for the Berlin museums on January 1, 1926 . There he worked as scientific assistant, from 1927 as curator and 1932 as curator and professor worked. He had to supervise the construction of the Pergamon Altar and built the market gate of Miletus . In 1935 Massow went to Trier and took over the management of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum . There he was particularly concerned with researching the Roman Trier . He was unable to take up a position as honorary professor in Bonn due to the war and serious illness. He was removed from service by slander. Despite rehabilitation and written submissions, he was not granted reinstatement as director of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum.
