Willy Zschietzschmann
Willy Zschietzschmann (born February 15, 1900 in Bautzen , † October 4, 1976 in Gießen ) was a German classical archaeologist .
Willy Zschietzschmann studied classical archeology , art history , prehistory and classical philology in Kiel , Munich and Leipzig . In 1924 he received his doctorate in Jena with the dissertation "Investigations into Sign Language in Older Greek Art". In 1928/29 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . In 1932 he received his habilitation in Berlin and was then a private lecturer and assistant at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin . Research trips took him to Greece, Italy, Egypt and the Near East during this time. He took part in excavations in Pergamon and Athens .
From 1937 he taught classical archeology at the University of Giessen , initially with a teaching position, then until 1945 as an associate professor. In 1939 he was able to expand the university's teaching collection considerably through purchases. From 1939 until his return as a seriously wounded man in 1944, he served in the war. It is thanks to his prudence that the collection of originals survived the war with almost no loss. After the war, the chair for Classical Archeology in Giessen remained closed and Zschietzschmann was entrusted with the provisional administration of the Giessen Institute as a scientific adviser until his retirement in 1965, after which he held a lectureship in Greek architecture and topography until 1969. From 1952 to 1972 Zschietzschmann also headed the Gießen adult education center . Also in 1952 he became President of the German-Greek Society, Giessen Section. In 1958 he carried out excavations at the Arnsburg monastery .
