Aphria is a Canadian medical cannabis manufacturer based in Leamington , Ontario . The company was founded in 2013 and has several rearing and research sites around the world. With a market value of around 3.8 billion US dollars, Aphria was one of the largest cannabis growers in the world in 2018. Health Canada granted approval to manufacture and distribute medicinal cannabis products in 2014 . In December 2017, an agreement was reached with the Canadian pharmacy chain Shoppers Drug Mart , according to which Shoppers Drug Mart agreed to sell Aphria products through its online shop.

The group subsidiary Aphria Germany is building a greenhouse in Neumünster in which Aphria Germany would like to grow the cannabis sativa plant as the first licensed producer of cannabis products in Germany. The greenhouse will be built in compliance with high security requirements and should be completed in summer 2020. As the sole purchaser of the products, the German Federal Ministry of Health has a monopoly on demand and ensures that they are distributed to patients.
