Norman Gerald "Norm" Ferguson (born October 16, 1945 in Sydney , Nova Scotia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played 289 games for the Oakland Seals and California Golden Seals in the course of his active career between 1963 and 1978 in the National Hockey League (NHL) and 462 other games for the New York Raiders, New York Golden Blades or Jersey Knights , San Diego Mariners and Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association (WHA) on the position of the center . His son Craig was also a professional ice hockey player in the NHL.

Career

Ferguson first spent his junior years in the province of Québec , where he took part in the Memorial Cup with the Monarchs de Montréal in 1964 . With the beginning of the 1964/65 season, the striker was on the ice for the Canadien junior de Montréal in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) for the following two years . These were in turn in cooperation with the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League (NHL), with which Ferguson was under contract.

From the beginning of the 1966/67 season , the Canadian played in the professional field for the Canadiens' farm teams . First for one season for the Houston Apollos in the Central Professional Hockey League (CPHL), then one season for the Cleveland Barons in the American Hockey League (AHL). With no prospect of an engagement in the jersey of Canadiens in the NHL, Ferguson was part of a major transfer between Montréal and the Oakland Seals , who had been admitted to the league the previous year, in May 1968 . Ferguson moved to California with Stan Fuller , François Lacombe and Michel Jacques , while the French-Canadians Wally Boyer , Alain Caron and Lyle Bradley and Oakland received first-round voting rights in the NHL Amateur Drafts in 1968 and 1970 . In the franchise , which operated under the name California Golden Seals from the 1970/71 season , Ferguson spent a total of four seasons as a regular in the NHL. His best year was already in his rookie season when he collected 54 scorer points .

After four years in the NHL, Ferguson decided in the summer of 1972 to switch to the newly founded World Hockey Association (WHA), which was established as a competitive league for the NHL . There the New York Raiders had secured his transfer rights for the WHA in the WHA General Player Draft , which took place in February 1972. In the NHL, meanwhile, he was selected by the New York Islanders in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft . For the 1972/73 season the attacker was in the squad of the New York Raiders, where he scored 68 times in his first year in the league in 56 missions. The following season the franchise began under the name New York Golden Blades , but still moved to neighboring New Jersey during the current season , where it ended the season as Jersey Knights . In the summer of 1974 Ferguson moved with the team to San Diego, California and wore the jersey of the San Diego Mariners for the next three years until the summer of 1977 . There he was able to achieve more than 70 points and 30 goals in each of the three years. After the dissolution of the Mariners in the summer of 1977, the offensive player played his last professional season in the jersey of the Edmonton Oilers in the 1977/78 season . The 32-year-old then ended his active career.

After retiring Ferguson worked briefly in the 1978/79 season as head coach of the junior team Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League (WHL), when he replaced Wayne Tennant during the season on this post. Ferguson successfully qualified for the playoffs. Due to the dissolution of the franchise in the summer of 1979, however, his engagement ended immediately.
