Henry Lewis "Lew" Morrison (born February 11, 1948 in Gainsborough , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 581 games for the Philadelphia Flyers , Atlanta Flames , Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins in the course of his playing career between 1967 and 1978 in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the position of right winger . At the time of his NHL career, Morrison was one of the best outnumbered players in the NHL.
Career
Morrison was born in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan , but grew up in Manitoba , where he played successfully in the lower class junior area. For the 1967/68 season he joined the Flin Flon Bombers from the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL). With the team, which also included Bobby Clarke , Reggie Leach and Gerry Hart , the striker had an outstanding playing time, which they finished in first place after the regular season and finally advanced to the final series of the playoffs. There they were subject to the Estevan Bruins . After the season, the 20-year-old was selected in the 1968 NHL Amateur Draft in eighth overall position by the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL).
For the 1968/69 season, the Canadian moved to the professional field and was first used by the Flyers in the farm team As de Québec in the American Hockey League (AHL). With the As he reached the final series of the Calder Cup during the season , to which he contributed nine scorer points in 15 playoff games . As in the previous year in the WCHL, Morrison was part of the losing team. At the beginning of the 1969/70 season, the defensive striker was finally a regular in the NHL squad in Philadelphia and spent three years there. After the 1971/72 season he was then selected in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft by the newly formed Atlanta Flames after Philadelphia had not protected him for the draft. At the Atlanta Flames, Morrison advanced to one of the best undernumbered players in the entire league in the following two years , who always received only a few penalty minutes on his part.
Due to the NHL Expansion Draft in 1974 , the attacker had to change teams again in the summer of 1974. From then on he was under contract with the Washington Capitals , who initially used him in the AHL at the Richmond Robins at the beginning of the 1974/75 season , for which he had already played a few games three years earlier - at that time still in service with the Philadelphia Flyers. After nine games, however, he was ordered into the NHL squad of the capital city, where he played 18 games before he was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins in December of the same year in exchange for Ron Lalonde . In June 1975, Don Seiling completed the transfer business when he moved to Washington. Morrison was active for the Penguins for almost four years until November 1978.
After he had been deported to the farm team Binghamton Dusters in the AHL during the 1978/79 season and had spent the rest of the season there, he ended his active career in the summer of 1979 at the age of 31. In 2017, Morrison was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame .
