Ronald Leo "Ron" Lalonde (born October 30, 1952 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 397 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League between 1970 and 1981 ( NHL) on the position of the center . However, Lalonde celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Hershey Bears by winning the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 1980.
Career
Lalonde spent his junior years between 1970 and 1972 with the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA). With the team, the striker won the J. Ross Robertson Cup , the OHA championship trophy, in the 1971/72 season . As a result, the Petes also took part in the prestigious Memorial Cup , which they could not win, but Lalonde was the top scorer of the tournament with three goals in as many games. He was then selected in the fourth round of the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft in 56th place by the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL).
In the late summer of 1972, the Canadian was signed by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He spent most of the 1972/73 season with the Hershey Bears farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL), after he had been in the Penguins' squad at the start of the season and there seven of his nine NHL appearances in his first year as a professional had completed. From the beginning of the game year 1972/74 Lalonde was a regular in Pittsburgh and acted in the season 1974/75 as one of the assistant captains . From this office he resigned in December 1974, however, because he was given to the newcomer Washington Capitals in exchange for Lew Morrison after a weak start to the season with only three assists in the first 24 appearances of the season . In June 1975, Don Seiling completed the transfer business when he moved to Washington. In Washington, the attacker was a regular player for the following four years until the end of the 1977/78 season. At the beginning of the following season, Lalonde found himself in the AHL again, where initially ran up on loan for the Binghamton Dusters and then back in the squad of the Hershey Bears, which now served as Washington's farm team. Only in January 1979 was the offensive player in the NHL squad of the capital city for a longer period.
After Lalonde spent the 1979/80 season completely in the AHL with the Hershey Bears and won the Calder Cup with them at the end of the season , he turned his back on the North American continent in the summer of 1980. The center forward ended his career in the Austrian Ice Hockey League (ÖEL). There he was on the ice in 28 games for HC Salzburg before he declared his career over after the season at the age of 29
