Barry Ashbee (born July 28, 1939 in Weston , Ontario ; † May 12, 1977 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach who worked for the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia from 1956 to 1974, among others Flyers has played in the National Hockey League .
Career
Ashbee played with the Barrie Flyers in the Ontario Hockey Association during his junior years . After a few years with the Kingston Frontenacs in the Eastern Professional Hockey League , he came to the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League in 1962 . At that time there were only six teams in the National Hockey League . The robust Ashbee was unable to fight for a place here. Only in the 1965/66 season he came to 14 missions with the Boston Bruins . A serious injury caused him to sit out the following season completely.
When the NHL had grown to 14 teams in the 1970/71 season , the Philadelphia Flyers brought him to their team. His physical play fit into the concept of the Flyers. Here he developed into one of the team's best defenders. When Philadelphia was the first of the new teams to win the Stanley Cup in the 1973/74 season , Aschbee was in the squad. However, he missed the final series after sustaining a serious eye injury in the semi-final series against the New York Rangers . After the injury did not allow a return as a player, he took over the role of assistant coach for the Flyers. At the end of the following season, the Flyers blocked a shirt number for the first time. Barry Ashbee's number 4 has not been awarded since then. Since then, the team's best defender has also been awarded the Barry Ashbee Trophy .
In April 1977 Ashbee was diagnosed with leukemia . He succumbed to this disease just a month later.
