Map with all coordinates: The University Tunnel , also known as the University Tunnel , is a two-tube motorway tunnel on the A 46 in the area of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . It is located in the southern part of the Bilk district and runs below a park that was created by the construction of the tunnel on the site of today's Heinrich Heine University . The length of the tunnel, opened in 1983, is 1026 m, the height of the tubes 4.85 m. The tunnel has a width of 17.35 m per tube.
Each tube has three lanes and one hard shoulder. The maximum permissible speed in the tunnel is 80 km / h. The tunnel is traversed by around 65,400 vehicles every day (including heavy haulage: 14.6%) (as of 2015 traffic census).
In the 2008 ADAC tunnel test, the university tunnel was once again classified as “questionable”, making it last among the eight German tunnels tested.
The University tunnel was then extensively renovated by 2015 in order to adapt this tunnel to the safety standards of the RABT (guidelines for the equipment and operation of road tunnels) in 2006
