The Reichswaldallee tunnel (also called "Volkardey tunnel ") is a two-tube motorway tunnel on the A 44 in the north of the Rath district of the North Rhine-Westphalian capital Düsseldorf . The tunnel has a length of 695 m (south tube) and 725 m (north tube) and runs with two lanes and one hard shoulder per tube. The tunnel was opened in 1991 as part of the extension of the A 44. By then the motorway had come to an end at the Reichswaldallee junction in front of it . The tunnel is traversed by around 40,000 vehicles every day (including heavy goods vehicles: 5.1%) (as of 2015 traffic census).

The railway line in the direction of Essen and the Rheinbahn metro line U72 to Ratingen run above the tunnel . The maximum permissible speed in the tunnel is 80 km / h.

The Reichswaldallee tunnel will be extensively renovated in the near future (planned from 2020) in order to adapt this tunnel to the safety standards of the RABT (guidelines for the equipment and operation of road tunnels) 2006.
