Biwabik is a city in St. Louis County in Minnesota , United States . The population in 2000 was 954. The name of the city is derived from the name for iron in the Ojibwe language , Biwabiko-nabik-wan .

It's on Minnesota State Route 135 . According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 13.2 km², of which 12.4 km² is land and 0.9 km² (= 6.65%) is water.

At the time of the United States Census 2000 Biwabik inhabited 954 people. The population density was 77.2 people per km ². There were 492 housing units at an average of 39.8 per km ². The Hoquiam population was 97.59% White , 2.10% Native American , 0.10% Asian , 0.10% Pacific Islander , 0.10% named two or more races.
The residents of Biwabik were distributed to 454 households out of which 25.1% had children under 18 years of age. 44.1% of households were married, 9.5% had a female head of household without a husband, and 41.4% were not families. 37.0% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 17.6% of all households aged 65 years or older.
