Iron Mountain is a small town (with the status " City ") in St. Louis County in the US -amerikanischen State Minnesota . In 2010 Mountain Iron had 2869 inhabitants.
Mountain Iron is part of the Quad Cities Minnesota with the neighboring cities of Virginia , Eveleth and Gilbert .
The city calls itself the "Taconite Capital of the World" because of the taconite mined here , which is extracted in the local Minntac mine belonging to the United States Steel Corporation . The preprocessed ore is transported by rail to the port cities on the Upper Lake and from there by cargo ships to the steel locations in the Great Lakes area.

The US Highway 169 leads from its northern end point in the neighboring city of Virginia as the main road in the city through the south of the urban area of Mountain Iron. All other roads are subordinate and partly unpaved roads as well as inner-city connecting roads.
A railway line of the Canadian National Railway (CN) belonging Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway runs through the western urban area of Mountain Iron from the Taconite mine to the port cities of Duluth and Two Harbors on Lake Superior. Along the eastern city limits runs a route of the Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway , also belonging to the CN , on which other freight is transported.
