Harry Cobb Rooney (born March 23, 1900 in Virginia , Minnesota , USA - † May 14, 1973 in Bremerton , Washington ) was an American football player . He played as a blocking back in the National Football League (NFL). Rooney and his two brothers Joe and Bill played simultaneously for the Duluth Kelleys / Eskimos in 1924 and 1927 . They are the only three brothers who played for the same football team in the NFL at the same time.

Player career

Cobb Rooney grew up with his brothers Joe and Bill in Virginia , Minnesota . They went to high school there . In 1924 he became a professional footballer with the Duluth Kelleys, who were coached by Dewey Scanlon . The team from Duluth was initially owned by their players. His two brothers had already joined the team in the preseason. In 1926, the Eskimos were able to tie the later members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Walt Kiesling , John McNally and Ernie Nevers to the team. However, nothing changed about the team's unsuccessfulness. Although Nevers had also taken over the coaching position in 1927, the Eskimos had to stop their game operations after this season due to financial problems. Coob Rooney then moved to the New York Yankees to leave the team after a year of play for the Chicago Cardinals , who were looked after by his former coach Dewey Scanlon in 1929. In 1930 Nevers took over as coach for the Chicago team . Even with his new team, Rooney did not win a title. He ended his career in Chicago after two years.
