Joseph Patrick "Joe" Rooney (born August 28, 1898 in Saskatoon , Canada , † March 4, 1979 in St. Louis County , Minnesota ) was an American American football player . He played as tackle and end in the National Football League (NFL). Rooney and his two brothers Cobb and Bill played simultaneously for the Duluth Kelleys / Eskimos in 1924 and 1927 . They are the only three brothers who played for the same football team in the NFL at the same time.

Player career

Joe Rooney grew up with his brothers Cobb and Bill in Virginia , Minnesota . They went to high school there . Joe and his brother Bill played basketball in high school and were elected to the state selection in 1915. His brother Bill was able to repeat this success in 1916.

In 1923, Joe Rooney became a professional footballer with the Duluth Kelleys, who were coached by Joey Sternaman . The team from Duluth was owned by their players. His brother Bill also joined the team in the same year, and Cobb also joined the team a year later. From 1924 the team was trained by Dewey Scanlon , who also acted as manager. The team did not achieve sporting success. After the season, Rooney moved to the Rock Island Independents , only to return to the Duluth Eskimos a year later. In 1926, the Eskimos were able to tie the later members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Walt Kiesling , John McNally and Ernie Nevers to the team. However, nothing changed about the team's unsuccessfulness. Although Nevers had also taken over the coaching position in 1927, the Eskimos had to stop their game operations after this season due to financial problems. Rooney then moved to the Pottsville Maroons trained by Pete Henry . The Maroons moved to Boston after the season . Rooney played two more games for the Chicago Cardinals in 1929 , which were coached by his former coach Dewey Scanlon and then ended his career.
