Dewey D. Scanlon (* 16th August 1899 in Duluth , Minnesota ; † 24. April 1944 ,) was an American American football players , managers and - coach .

Player and coach career

Dewey Scanlon attended Valparaiso University in Chicago and played college football on the position of quarterback for their football team .

In 1923 he was one of the co-founders of the Duluth Kelleys , which were part of the National Football League (NFL). The team's players were also co-owners of the team. Scanlon initially worked as the manager of the Kelleys. In 1924 he also replaced Joey Sternaman as the team's head coach . Due to financial problems, the Kelleys were sold to Ole Haugsrud and Scanlon in 1925 . From then on, Haugsrud acted as the team's manager, while Scanlon remained as the team's coach. For the 1926 season they were able to strengthen the team with later members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Ernie Nevers , Walt Kiesling and John McNally . The Kelleys were renamed Duluth Eskimos . That season, Dewey Scanlon also had his only appearance as a player. The team remained unsuccessful in terms of sport. Before the 1927 season, Nevers took over the post of coach from Scanlon. The change in coaching could not prevent the Eskimos from having to withdraw from the NFL after the 1927 season due to financial problems.

Scanlon took over the coaching position with the Chicago Cardinals in 1929 . The Cardinals finished fourth in the NFL after the season. Scanlon ended his coaching career after one round of play.

After the coaching career

Dewey Scanlon worked at a shipyard in Duluth after his career . He died in a domestic accident in 1944.
