Matthew Zachary Jarrett "Matt" Read (born June 14, 1986 in Ilderton , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League since September 2019 .
Career
Matt Read began his career as a hockey player with the Milton Icehawks, for which he was active in the 2005/06 season in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Junior Hockey League . The following season he spent with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the US junior league United States Hockey League . He then attended Bemidji State University for four years , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . With his university team, he first took part in the game operation of College Hockey America for three years , whose championship he won in 2010 with Bemidji State University. He himself was elected to the CHA's first All-Star Team in 2009 and 2010, was named Rookie of the Year in 2008 and Player of the Year in 2010. After the men's championship of the CHA had been dissolved, Read joined his university team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in the 2010/11 season .
The 2010/11 season ended the center with the Adirondack Phantoms in the American Hockey League . By the end of the season he scored seven goals and six assists in eleven games for the Phantoms. For the 2011/12 season he was promoted to the squad of Adirondack's cooperation partner Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League . With the Flyers he was able to assert himself straight away as a regular player in the NHL. He spent the lockout of the 2012/13 season at Södertälje SK in the Swedish Allsvenskan .
After around seven years in the Flyers organization, his contract, which was about to expire, was not extended after the 2017/18 season, so he had been looking for a new employer since July 2018. He found this in the Minnesota Wildlife , which provided him with a one-year contract. After the 2019/20 season, he received no further NHL contract, so he joined the Toronto Marlies from the AHL in September 2019 .
