Kyle Quincey (born August 12, 1985 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Helsingfors IFK in the Finnish Liiga since August 2018 .
Career
Kyle Quincey began his career in 2002 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the London Knights . After his first year, he was selected in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings in the fourth round at position 132. At the beginning of the 2003/04 season he moved within the OHL to the Mississauga IceDogs . There he proved his skills on the offensive over the next two years, but also that he has mastered the physically tough game. In 2004 he failed with the IceDogs in the final of the OHL playoffs .
Before the 2005/06 season , he joined the Grand Rapids Griffins , who serve as the Detroit farm team in the American Hockey League . Quincey played a good debut season with 33 scorer points and reached the conference finals in the playoffs. He also came to his first use for Detroit in the National Hockey League .
In the 2006/07 game year he completed a slightly weaker season in Grand Rapids and came back for the Detroit Red Wings, for which he scored his first NHL goals. Due to injury-related defenses during the playoffs, he became an integral part of the team and moved into the final of the Western Conference with the Red Wings.
In the fall of 2007 Quincey competed during the training camp for a permanent place in the NHL squad, but broke his hand and played most of the 2007/08 season at the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL, where he did not build on the performances of previous years could. It was not until February 2008 that he was appointed to the NHL squad for the first time in the season when the Red Wings again had injury problems in defense. With 20 points, the lowest value in his AHL career, he finally ended his season in Grand Rapids and joined the Red Wings for the playoffs, where he was no longer used when they won the Stanley Cup .
Before the 2008/09 season Quincey could not recommend himself again for a place in the NHL roster and should be sent back to the AHL farm team on the waiver list, but the Los Angeles Kings signed him from the waiver. After a quite successful season in California with 38 points in 72 games, he was transferred to the Colorado Avalanche in Denver during the off-season together with Tom Preissing and a five-round draft pick in exchange for Ryan Smyth .
In his sophomore year in Denver, the defender sustained a shoulder injury on December 11, 2010 in a game against the Washington Capitals . This injury required an operation that excluded him from play for the remainder of the 2010-11 NHL season . After a good two and a half years in the Avalanche team, Quincey was handed over to the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 21, 2012 in exchange for Steve Downie , who transferred him to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a first-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and Sébastien Piché .
In October 2012, he signed a contract with the Denver Cutthroats from the Central Hockey League due to the lockout before the start of the 2012/13 NHL season . For the CHL team, which was founded before the season, the defender played in 12 games before the employment relationship was terminated in early December. Quincey eventually stayed with the Detroit Red Wings until the summer of 2016, before joining the New Jersey Devils as a free agent in September 2016 . In New Jersey, however, the defender only stayed half a year until the Devils handed him over to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the trade deadline on March 1, 2017 in exchange for Dalton Prout .
In Columbus, the defender fulfilled his expiring contract until the end of the season. He then moved in July 2017 as a free agent to the Minnesota Wild , which also did not renew his expiring contract in the summer of 2018. As a result, Quincey decided to move to Europe for the first time when he joined Helsingfors IFK from the Finnish Liiga in August 2018 .
