Alexander Salák (born January 5, 1987 in Strakonice , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper who was last under contract to Dinamo Riga from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) until July 2020 .
Career
Alexander Salák began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of HC České Budějovice . In the 2001/02 season he also came to work for the U18 juniors of the IHC Písek . In the following four years he went through the junior teams of HC České Budějovice. The 2005/06 season, however, ended the goalkeeper in the third-class 2nd division , in which he was on the ice for HC Strakonice and HC Tábor .
For the 2006/07 season Salák moved to Jokipojat Joensuu from the Mestis , the second Finnish division. There he was able to attract the attention of the TPS Turku from the SM-liiga , who signed him in the summer of 2007. In the following two seasons, Salák established himself as the club's regular goalkeeper and performed very well with catch rates of 91.5% and 92.3%. This convinced the management of the Florida Panthers , who signed him before the 2009/10 season at the end of May 2009. For the Panthers he completed two NHL games and was otherwise used by the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League .
His contract expired in the summer of 2010. Since the regular goalkeeper of the Färjestad BK , Robin Rahm , was suspended for doping, the Swedish club signed Salák in August 2010. In February 2011, the Florida Panthers gave up his rights to the Chicago Blackhawks . In the 2010/11 season Salák won the Swedish championship with Färjestad BK . At the end of May 2011, the Chicago Blackhawks used their rights to Salák, who signed a two-year contract. Salák then played for the Rockford IceHogs , but was only used 21 times during the 2011/12 season and therefore returned to Färjestad BK in summer 2012.
In the 2012/13 season of the Elitserien, Salák had the best goalscoring and catch rate of all goalkeepers in the league, which prompted SKA Saint Petersburg from the Continental Hockey League to sign him in May 2013. He played at SKA until December 2014 and performed well before he was exchanged for Mikko Koskinen from HK Sibir Novosibirsk . In the following four years Salák was the regular goalkeeper of Sibir Novosibirsk and was regularly among the statistically best goalkeepers in the league. In 2018 he did not get a new contract with SIbir and switched to Lokomotive Yaroslavl for one year within the KHL . For the railway sports club from Yaroslavl he completed a total of 26 games in the KHL and showed convincing performances.
The Czech then moved to the Latvian capital club Dinamo Riga for the 2019/20 season within the KHL .
International
For the Czech Republic Salák took part in the U18 Junior World Championship in 2005 , where he finished fourth with his team.
