Oprente - drum from Ghana

The oprente is a single-headed drum that is played in traditional music in Togo and Ghana .

It is one of the cup drums , but has a shorter neck than the Arabic cup drums. The instrument is made from a piece of wood from the Tweneboa tree and traditionally covered with an antelope skin. The skin is stretched and tuned by means of a peg covering.

The oprente is one of the most popular drums of the Ewe , an ethnic group that is native to the south-east of Ghana and the south-west of Togo . It is part of a drum ensemble that also includes other barrel and cup drums. The composition of these sets varies depending on the occasion and in which region they are used. It is often used on ceremonial occasions.

Rhythms that are played on the oprente are e.g. B. the Ga-Fetish dance Nana and Fume Fume , a non-traditional dance (both from Ghana).

It is mainly played by hand; depending on the song, a thin stick is sometimes used to play.
