Hans Jänichen

Hans Jänichen (born December 4, 1909 in Gebweiler ; † November 27, 1976 in Tübingen ) was a German historian .

Life

Jänichen studied history, German and English at the universities in Tübingen, Vienna and Munich. He was particularly interested in the early Middle Ages . In 1935 he wrote his dissertation on The Vikings in the Vistula and Oderland . His habilitation thesis Scripture and Symbol in the Eurasian Area of ​​the Middle Ages burned in Cottbus during World War II. After being a prisoner of war, he came to Reutlingen in 1947 , where he found work in 1954 in the State Description Department of the State Statistical Office. In 1964 he became head of the department for the description of the country in the archives department in Stuttgart. He was a member of the commission for historical regional studies in Baden-Wuerttemberg , advisory board of the Wuerttemberg historical and antiquity association, on the board of the Alemannic Institute and a member of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin. In addition, he took a teaching position at the University of Tübingen since 1966.

On November 27, 1976, a few days before he would turn 67, Hans Jänichen succumbed to a long, serious illness. Through the volumes of the district descriptions of Balingen, Tübingen and Ulm that he edited, he has become known to the general public far beyond the specialist community.
