Career

Mattias Bäckman began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the junior division of Linköpings HC , for whose professional team he made his debut in the Elitserien , the top Swedish division, in the 2009/10 season . In five games he remained pointless. In the 2010/11 season he played another six games in the Elitserien for the LHC, for which he was also used in the European Trophy . Then he was selected first in the KHL Junior Draft 2011 in the fourth round as a total of 96th player from HK Awangard Omsk and then in the NHL Entry Draft 2011 in the fifth round as a total of 146th player selected by the Detroit Red Wings . Initially, however, the defender remained in Linköping, where he was able to earn a regular place in the 2011/12 season.

In May 2013, Bäckman received a three-year NHL entry contract with Red Wings, which initially loaned him to Linköpings HC. In April 2014, the management of the Red Wings brought him to North America, where he played for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League (AHL).

In December 2014, the Red Wings signed another loan deal with the Linköpings HC before ceding its rights to the Dallas Stars in March 2015 . At the same time, the stars received Mattias Janmark and a second-round vote for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft , while they gave Erik Cole and a performance-based third-round vote for the same draft to the Red Wings. As a result, Bäckman ran for the Texas Stars and from March 2017 until the end of the season for the Hershey Bears in the AHL.

The defender then returned to Europe and signed a one-year contract with EHC Kloten from the Swiss National League in June 2017 . After completing this contract, he returned to his home club.
