Erik Thomas Cole (born November 6, 1978 in Oswego , New York ) is a former American ice hockey player who played 938 games for the Carolina Hurricanes , Edmonton Oilers , Canadiens de Montréal , Dallas between 1996 and 2015 Stars and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League on the position of left winger . With the Carolina Hurricanes, Cole won the Stanley Cup in 2006 .
Career
Cole began his career in 1996 in the United States Hockey League as a junior player with the Des Moines Buccaneers. From there he switched to North American college ice hockey at Clarkson University . During this time he was drawn by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in the second round in 71st place. Here Cole made it into an All-Star selection several times . As a full professional he then played in the International Hockey League IHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones , the partners of the Carolina Hurricanes. In his second season he was able to score 23 goals and played his way to the Hurricanes in the NHL for the 2001/02 season .
His first NHL season Cole could finish as the fifth top scorer among the NHL newbies . He was also able to reach the final series of the play-offs for the Stanley Cup this season with the Hurricanes , which they lost to the Detroit Red Wings . In the coming season, Cole could not play in all games due to injuries. In the 2003/04 season he then reached 42 points.
Cole spent the lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season in Germany with the Eisbären Berlin in the German Ice Hockey League , where he was able to celebrate the championship title. In the play-offs , Cole was able to score five goals and one assist . In the third game of the best-of-five series in the final play-off round of the Eisbären against Adler Mannheim , Cole was able to score an undernumbered goal and thus provided the equalizer, which the Eisbären then expanded to victory, to which Cole still another Hit contributed. Cole attracted negative attention when he checked defender Arvīds Reķis hard against the head in the play-off quarter-finals against the Augsburg Panthers , so that Rekis hit the ice and suffered a serious concussion . Cole should be suspended for six games and be obliged to pay a fine of 1,800 euros. After the polar bears objected, Cole was suspended for four more games. Cole apologized in public to Rekis, but also stated that he never intended to hurt his opponent. The fans of the Eisbären Berlin themselves expressed criticism in public by always shouting the name "Cole" in consultation with the club during the suspension of the Eisbären team. The following season , Cole returned to the Carolina Hurricanes. Until recently he had repeatedly emphasized that if his services were no longer enough for the NHL, he would not rule out a return to Berlin.
In the regular season he was able to score the decisive goal eight times. In March 2006, Cole suffered a fracture of a cervical vertebra during a check from behind against the gang by Brooks Orpik , defender of the Pittsburgh Penguins , previously Cole had scored two goals in a game for the second time in a row in the same game. Orpik was suspended for three games. Only in the sixth game of the last play-off series in 2006 was Cole able to return to the ice and won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes . Despite the injury-related absence, he was able to look back on his best NHL season so far with 30 goals and 29 assists. In the summer of 2006 he received a contract for a further three years from the Hurricanes.
On July 1, 2011, Cole signed a four-year contract with the Montréal Canadiens . In February 2013 he was transferred to the Dallas Stars , in exchange Michael Ryder moved - together with a third-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft - to the Montréal Canadiens.
After almost two years, Cole was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings together with a performance-based third-round voting right in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft . In return, Dallas received Mattias Bäckman , Mattias Janmark and a second-round vote in the 2015 draft. By the end of the season, Cole had eleven appearances for the Red Wings, who then announced that they would not renew his contract. In September 2017, Cole finally returned his retirement from active sports.
International
Cole represented the US at the 2005 World Cup . Here he scored one goal and five assists in seven games and reached sixth place with his team. At the 2006 Winter Olympics he scored a goal and an assist. The United States came in eighth.
