Johann Christian August Schwartz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Christian August Schwartz (* 1756 in Hildesheim ; † March 7, 1814 in Braunschweig ) was a German portrait painter who probably lived mainly in Braunschweig, but also repeatedly in Hamburg , Berlin (1808), Dresden and Bremen (1803/07) stayed to execute orders. His pastel portraits are of excellent quality .

Life

Little is known about his biographical stations. An apprenticeship in Braunschweig is assumed, since he initially worked in the lacquerware manufacture of Stobwasser and a stay with Mengs in Dresden is assumed. In 1781 he married Henriette Karoline Schröder, whose sister Christiane Elisabeth married the painter Friedrich Georg Weitsch in 1794 . He was also related by marriage to the engraver Carl Schröder. In 1789 he became a foreign member of the Berlin Academy and in 1794 a Brunswick court painter .

Schwartz's work consists almost exclusively of pastel portraits in which he creates meticulously detailed drawings of busts against a dark background or a moving sky that go to the limits of this technique. The markings in the expressive eyes that keep the viewer in view have a high recognition value . Some of his portraits were engraved in copper by Carl Schröder, Johann Friedrich Bause , Johann Friedrich Jügel and Johann Gerhard Huck .
