The Latvian Ice Hockey Federation ( Latvijas Hokeja Federācija in Latvian ) is the national ice hockey federation of the country of Latvia , which was founded in 1930 and in 1931 was accepted as a member of the forerunner of the IIHF , the Ligue internationale de hockey sur glace . With the occupation of Latvia by the Soviet Union , membership in the IIHF expired in 1946. After the declaration of independence and the re-establishment of the ice hockey association in 1991, Latvia was accepted back into the IIHF at the IIHF Congress in Prague .

The Latvian national ice hockey team , the Latvian women's national team and the youth national teams present the association at international level . Over 7000 players and 150 referees are licensed by the association. In addition, the association organizes the Latvian ice hockey league, the second and third league, as well as the youth games and the women's ice hockey league.

The Latvian Ice Hockey Association has hosted an A men's world championship to this day , the 2006 Ice Hockey World Championship in Riga . In addition, a number of Junior World Championships have been held (including 2001 , 2003 and 2006 ).
