Petri Kontiola (born October 4, 1984 in Seinäjoki ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho from the Finnish Liiga since August 2020 and plays there in the position of the center .

Career

Petri Kontiola began his career as a ice hockey player in his Finnish homeland in the youth of Tappara Tampere , for whose professional team he was active in the SM-liiga from 2003 to 2007 . In addition, the attacker was on the ice in six games for the Finnish U20 national team in the second-rate Mestis in the 2003/04 season . In the 2004 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the seventh round as the 196th player of the Chicago Blackhawks .

For the Blackhawks he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2007/08 season , preparing five goals in twelve games. Most of his time in the franchise of the Chicago Blackhawks spent the Finn at their farm team in the American Hockey League , the Rockford IceHogs . On March 4, 2009 Kontiola was given together with James Wisniewski in exchange for Samuel Påhlsson and Logan Stephenson to the Anaheim Ducks , for their AHL farm team, the Iowa Chops , he played exclusively until the end of the season.

On May 26, 2009, the right-handed shooter received a two-year contract with HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk from the Continental Hockey League . In the 2010/11 season he was the top scorer of Magnitogorsk with 47 points, but received no contract extension after the end of the season. In May 2011 Kontiola was signed by HK tractor Chelyabinsk .

In early July 2014, Kontiola terminated his contract with HK Traktor and signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs . He subsequently took part in the training camp of the Maple Leafs, but did not make it into the NHL roster of the Maple Leafs and was sent to the AHL to the Toronto Marlies . In the course of the 2014/15 season Kontiola was placed on the waiver list after 11 AHL games without a scorer point and then returned to the KHL. Three days later, HK Traktor gave Kontiolas KHL rights to Lokomotive Yaroslavl and received Alexei Kruchinin and Yegor Martynow in return . Kontiola received a two-year contract with Lokomotive.

After five years of playing at Lokomotive, in which he played over 250 KHL games, he left the club after the 2018/19 season and received a one-year contract with Jokerit in May 2019 . Kontiola returned to the Finnish domestic league in August 2020 after joining Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho .

International

For Finland , Kontiola took part in the 2004 U20 Junior World Championships , as well as the 2007 , 2010 and 2012 World Championships .

At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the national team and was the tournament's top scorer with a total of 16 points. He was also named the best striker of the tournament and was voted into the All-Star team. At the 2014 Olympic Games, he won the bronze medal with the Finnish national team.
