Martin Nikolow ( Bulgarian Мартин Николов ; born February 12, 1994 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian ice hockey player who has been playing at Avesta BK in Swedish Division 2 since 2017 .

Career

Martin Nikolow began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown Sofia at HK Slawia Sofia , with whom he became Bulgarian U16 and U18 national champion. In 2009 he left his homeland and played with HC Benátky nad Jizerou and HC Mělník for a total of four years in Czech youth leagues. In 2013 he went to HC Topoľčany in the highest Slovak junior league for a short time . But already during the season he moved to Sweden, where he played with the U20 of Wings HC Arlanda in the third-class 1st division. With the club from Märsta , he was promoted to the second-class J20 elite at the end of his junior years. He then moved to North America, where he was initially on the ice with the Almaguin Spartans in the Canadian Junior League GMHL. In March 2015, he moved to the Steel City Warriors in the Federal Hockey League . After stints with the Almaguin Spartans in the Greater Montreal Hockey League and the EC Eisbären Eppelheim in the Regionalliga Süd-West , he has been playing at Avesta BK in the Swedish Division 2 since 2017 .

International

In the junior division, Nikolov, who is used as both a striker and a defender, played at the U18 World Championships in 2009 , 2010 , 2011 when he was the top scorer among the tournament's defenders, and in 2012 when he was voted the best player on his team as well as the U20 World Championships in 2012 and 2013 .

With the Bulgarian men's national team , Nikolov took part in the World Championships in Division II in 2012 , 2013 in 2015 and Division III in 2014 , when the Bulgarians managed to get promoted to Division II.
