Alexander Nikolajewitsch Switow ( Russian Александр Николаевич Свитов ; born November 3, 1982 in Omsk , Russian SFSR ) is a Russian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Lokomotive Yaroslavl from the Continental Hockey League since June 2019 .
Career
Alexander Switow comes from the HK Avangard Omsk ice hockey school . During the 1998/99 season, he made his debut on the Omsk farm team, Awangard WDW , at the age of 15 . In only 27 games he scored 15 goals and 8 assists, so that he was called up for a playoff game in the Superliga squad of Awangard. In the following season he received more ice time in the first team and brought it to 6 scorer points in 19 games this season. At the same time he continued to play for Awangard WDW in the Perwaja League , collecting a total of 22 scorer points in 14 games.
During the 2000/01 season he finally established himself in the first team, where he not only stood out as a scorer, but also with his physical presence. In 32 games of the main round, he collected 111 penalty minutes, but also scored 12 points scorer. With Awangard he reached the playoff final, in which his team lost 4-2 to HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk .
During the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , Switow was selected third in the first round by the Tampa Bay Lightning . In August 2001 he signed an entry contract for the National Hockey League , which forbade him to continue playing in the Super League. First he was then employed by the Awangard WDW farm team , which is subordinate to the Russian Air Force. In October 2001, he received Tampa's permission to play in the Super League again. Shortly before a Superliga game in Moscow, Switow, Kirill Kolzow and Stanislaw Tschistow were picked up by a unit of the Russian military police and forced to start their military service. As part of this, the players Switow and Tschistow were delegated to HK CSKA Moscow , where they were used in a few games.
After completing his military service, Switow moved to North America in the summer of 2002. Here he made his debut in the 2002/03 season for Tampa in the NHL and was able to reach eight points in 63 games. During the 2003/04 season he was mostly with the Hamilton Bulldogs in the American Hockey League for use and ran only in eleven NHL games for Tampa. In January 2004, he was given to the Columbus Blue Jackets , while Tampa received Darryl Sydor and a vote for the 2004 NHL Entry Draft . For the Jackets he completed 29 NHL games by the end of the season, in which he collected eight scorer points.
He spent the lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season at the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL and took part in the AHL All-Star Classic . For the 2005/06 season he returned to Awangard Omsk for one season in the Russian Super League . With Awangard he reached the playoff final in 2006 , in which his team Ak Bars Kazan lost 3-0. Switow contributed a total of 15 scorer points to the runner-up title, but also collected 152 penalty minutes.
For the 2006/07 season he returned with a one-year contract to the Jackets in the National Hockey League. In 76 games of the main round, he collected 18 points and 145 penalty minutes for the jackets that missed the playoffs. In early July 2007, Switow signed a new two-year contract for one million US dollars per season with the Blue Jackets. Six weeks later he signed another contract, this time with Awangard Omsk, for a term of three years. Since there was no valid transfer agreement between the Superliga and NHL at this time, the NHL obtained an international start ban in competitions of the IIHF for Switow and a few other players.
In the following three seasons he stood for Omsk in the super league and its successor league KHL as team captain on the ice. He scored around 20 points per season, but was particularly noticeable due to the many penalties. In early July 2010, Switov was committed by Salawat Yulayev Ufa . With his new team he won the Gagarin Cup at the end of the 2010/11 season .
In June 2013, Switow was signed by Ak Bars Kazan and initially acted as assistant captain, then from 2014 as team captain .
With Ak Bars he won the Gagarin Cup in 2018 and was also the Russian champion . He contributed a total of 14 scorer points to this success during the season. After a rather unsuccessful 2018/19 season, which was also marked by injuries, he left the club from Tatarstan and signed a contract with Lokomotive Yaroslavl in June 2019 .
International
Switow represented his home country at the U18 Junior World Championships in 2000 and the U20 Junior World Championships in 2001 and 2002 . At the U18 Junior World Championship, Switow won the silver medal with the team and was the best scorer of the Russian team with eight points behind Yegor Shastin . After the Russians finished seventh at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2001, they won the gold medal the following year. In both tournaments, the striker received the most penalty minutes of all players.
For the senior selection of the Sbornaja Switow came in the context of the Euro Hockey Tour 2009/10 and 2010/11 to first appearances before he made his debut at the men's world championship in 2012 for the national team and won the gold medal.
