Stephen Michael Gionta (born October 9, 1983 in Rochester , New York ) is a retired American ice hockey player . The winger played over 300 games for the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League during his active career , but was mostly used in the American Hockey League .

Career

Stephen Gionta began his career as a hockey player in his hometown with the Rochester Junior Americans, for which he was active in the junior league North American Hockey League in the 1999/2000 season . He then played for two years for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League and the NAHL. From 2002 to 2006 he attended Boston College and played parallel for its ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In 2003 he was elected to the Hockey East All Academic Team , and in 2005 he won the Hockey East Championship with Boston College. Towards the end of the 2005/06 season , the winger made his professional ice hockey debut when he scored five goals and one assist in three games for the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League (AHL) with a trial contract .

From 2006 to 2010 Gionta played for the Lowell Devils in the American Hockey League. He subsequently received a contract in August 2010 as a free agent with the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League , for which he in the 2010/11 season denied but only twelve games, while mostly for their new AHL farm team Albany Devils used came. Most of the following season he spent again with the Albany Devils in the AHL, before he was appointed to the NHL squad of the New Jersey Devils shortly before the playoffs.

After the 2015/16 season, his expiring contract in New Jersey was not renewed, so he joined the Bridgeport Sound Tigers from the AHL in October 2016 . Two months later, the Tigers' NHL cooperation partner, the New York Islanders , signed him for the rest of the season. In August 2017, his contract was finally extended for a further year before he initially received no further contract in summer 2018. It wasn't until mid-October that he received a new offer from the Islanders for a year. He fulfilled this and then ended his active career by being employed in the scouting department of the Tampa Bay Lightning .

International

For the USA , Gionta took part in the 2001 U18 Junior World Championship . During the tournament he scored two goals in six games. At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki , Gionta was a member of the men's national team and won the bronze medal with them.
