Career

Club

Szabolcs Papp, who belongs to the Hungarian-speaking Szekler minority in Romania , has played at HSC Csíkszereda since the beginning of his career . With the club from Miercurea Ciuc he won the Romanian championship title in 2004, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013 . From 2006 to 2008 he played with his team in the Hungarian ice hockey league and since 2008 in the then newly created MOL league . This international game series with teams from Hungary and Romania and, since 2012, a team from Slovakia, he was able to win the MOL League 2010/11 . In 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011, Papp finally won the Romanian ice hockey cup with the HSC Csíkszereda . In early 2015 he moved briefly to CSM Dunărea Galați , where he ended the season and with which he celebrated his first national title win. He then returned to HSC Csíkszereda, with whom he was again Romanian champion and cup winner in 2018.

International

In contrast to other Szeklers who play for Hungary , Papp plays internationally for his native Romania . He was already active in the junior division at world championships. He made his debut in the men's national team at the World Championships in Division I in 2003 and achieved relegation with his team at the Group A tournament in Budapest with a 3-1 win in the decisive final game against Lithuania . In 2004 and 2005 he played for Romania in Division I, but could not prevent relegation with his team in 2005. Already at the 2006 World Cup , the Romanians managed to win the title in Division II and thus get promoted again. He took part in Division I again at the 2007 and 2009 World Championships . After relegation in 2009, he was on the ice for his colors in Division II in 2010 and 2011 , when he was promoted again and not only achieved the best plus / minus balance, but was also voted the best defender of the tournament. In 2012 and 2013 he played with the Romanians again in Division I. After the Romanians were relegated from Division I in 2014 without cardboard, he led them as captain to immediate promotion at the 2015 World Cup . But even in 2016 he and his team could not stay in Division I.

He also played for Romania in the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014 and in Pyeongchang in 2018 .
