Jiří Tlustý (born March 16, 1988 in Slaný , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player . The left winger denied 2007-2016 over 400 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Carolina Hurricanes , Winnipeg Jets and New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League .

Career

Jiří Tlustý began his career in the junior teams of HC Kladno , which is known for its good youth work and has already produced NHL leaders such as Jaromír Jágr , Patrik Eliáš and Tomáš Kaberle . At the age of 14 he was already playing in Kladno's U18 team and outperforming teammates and opponents who were up to four years older. From 2003 he was then used in the U20 juniors and here he was able to prevail, so that he was used in the 2005/06 season in the men's team of HC Kladno, which plays in the Czech extra league. Due to the above-average talent and the great assertiveness Tlustý was selected ( drafted ) during the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the first round in 13th place by the Maple Leafs .

In the summer of 2006 he signed a three-year deal with the Maple Leafs and moved to North America to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds from the Ontario Hockey League , who secured the CHL rights to Tlustý during the 2005 CHL Import Draft . In the 2006/07 season he struggled with an elbow injury and still led the greyhounds to the semifinals of the OHL playoffs. In addition to his missions in the OHL, he also completed a few games in the American Hockey League for the Toronto Marlies , the farm team of the Maple Leafs.

In the summer of 2007, he first took part in the Prospect Camp of the Maple Leafs before he played the training camp and the preparatory games in the NHL squad of the Maple Leafs. However, he did not make the jump to the NHL squad initially, but was used again with the Marlies in the AHL. On October 26, 2007 he made his debut in the NHL against the Pittsburgh Penguins and scored two goals in that game. From then on, Tlustý was part of the Toronto Maple Leafs' NHL squad. In the first Junior Draft of the Continental Hockey League in the summer of 2009, he was selected in the second round in 43rd place by Atlant Mytishchi , who thus secured his transfer rights when moving to the KHL.

After six years and over 250 NHL appearances, the Hurricanes handed him over to the Winnipeg Jets in February 2015 and in return received a third-round suffrage and a success-based six-round suffrage for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . In Winnipeg, the winger ended the 2014/15 season, but received no contract beyond that, so he joined the New Jersey Devils as a free agent in September 2015 . There he ended the 2015/16 season and received no further contract offer from the Devils, so he returned to Europe in October 2016 and joined Oulun Kärpät from the Finnish Liiga . His trial contract there was terminated in December 2016 due to ongoing injury problems, before Tlustý was forced to end his active career due to a wrist injury.

International

For the U18 junior national team Tlustý took part in the U18 Junior World Championships in 2005 and 2006 . He was also appointed to the U20 national junior team in 2006 and took part in the 2006 U20 World Junior Championship.
