Mate Krešimir Tomljenović (born August 3, 1993 in Zagreb ) is a Croatian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with Sports de Glace Annecy in the French division 1 , the second highest division in the country, since 2017 .

Career

Mate Tomljenović began his career as an ice hockey player in the youth department of the KHL Mladost Zagreb . In 2008 he moved to Slovakia, where he played for the MHK Dubnica and the HKm Zvolen in the country's highest junior leagues. During his time in Zvolen, he was loaned from KHL Medveščak Zagreb , whose two goalkeepers were injured, on October 9, 2011 for a game of the Austrian Ice Hockey League against Klagenfurt AC . The Croatians had reported the transfer to the IIHF and the Croatian association, but only faxed an unsigned transfer card to the Austrian association, which meant that Tomljenović was not entitled to use. After several days, on October 13, 2011, the game, which the Croatians had won 5-4, was converted to 0-5 in favor of Klagenfurt.

In 2012 Tomljenović returned to his native Zagreb and played for the KHL Medveščak Zagreb in the Austrian U20 league. He was used by his club but also in the playoffs for the Croatian men's championship, which the team was able to win with 3-2 wins against Tomljenović's home club Mladost Zagreb. After this success he moved to HC 07 Detva , for which he was on the ice in the Slovak 1st division , the country's second highest division, and only made occasional missions as a second goalkeeper. In July 2014 he returned to Medveščak Zagreb and was mainly used in the Erste Bank Young Stars League , but also came to a game in the Continental Hockey League . After only a year he left Zagreb again and joined the Polish runner-up JKH GKS Jastrzębie , with whom he played in the Ekstraliga . As early as 2016, he moved to Medveščak again, but left it again after just one year. This time he went to France, where he plays for Sports de Glace Annecy in the French Division 1 , the second highest division in the country.

International

For Croatia , Tomljenović took part in Division I of the U-20 World Championships in 2011 , 2012 and 2013 in the junior division . He was named the best player in his team in 2012 and 2013.

In the senior division, Tomljenović was in the goal of the Croatians at the World Championships of Division II in 2011 , 2012 and 2013 , when he and his team were promoted to Division I. In 2011 and 2013 he conceded the fewest goals per game. In 2011 he had the best catch rate with 92.7% and was therefore also voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament. In 2012 he had the third best goal rate per game and per catch rate. In 2014 he played with his team in the B group of Division I and was voted the best player of his team with the second best catch rate of the tournament. In 2015 , 2016 , 2017 and 2018 he also took part in the Division I World Championship.

He was also on the ice for his colors at the qualifying tournaments for the 2014 Winter Olympics in September and November 2012. The Croatians were able to win the pre-qualification, but were eliminated in the first qualifying round after three defeats. He also played in the Olympic qualification for the Winter Games in Pyeongchang 2018 .
