Max Birbraer ( Russian Максим Бирбраер * 31 July 1981 in Ust-Kamenogorsk , Kazakhstan SSR ) is an Israeli - Kazakh hockey player who since 2016 in Swindon Wildcats is under contract with the club since 2017 in the National Ice Hockey League play . He is considered the most famous ice hockey player in Israel.

Career

The 1.85 m tall winger was born in Kazakhstan and initially played in his native Israel before moving to North America in 1999. After a year with the Newmarket Hurricanes in the second-rate game operation of the Canadian Hockey League , Birbrajer was selected in 2000 as the first Israeli in an NHL Entry Draft . The New Jersey Devils , who had secured the rights to the left-handed shooter in 67th place in the third round, only used him on their farm team , the Albany River Rats , in the American Hockey League .

For the 2003/04 season Birbrajer moved to league rivals San Antonio Rampage , but was soon only used with the Laredo Bucks in the Central Hockey League . After further engagements in the minor league ECHL , where he went on the ice for the San Diego Gulls and the Long Beach Ice Dogs , the Israeli moved to the Cardiff Devils in the British Elite Ice Hockey League . With these he won the EIHL Challenge Cup in 2007.

After two years in Great Britain, Maxim Birbrajer returned to his native Kazakhstan in 2008, where he played for Kaszink-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk in the Wysschaja Liga , the second Russian division. In January 2009, the attacker signed a contract with the German second division team Heilbronner Falken , which was not extended at the end of the season, despite good performances and twelve points, four of which were goals in 22 games. Since the 2009/10 season he has been back on the ice for the Cardiff Devils in the EIHL. On October 24, 2009 he set a new league record for the EIHL with seven assists in one game. In 2014 he moved to the Telford Tigers , with whom he won the championship and cup competition of the English Premier Ice Hockey League in 2015 . In 2016 he moved on to the Swindon Wildcats , with whom he won the Autumn Cup and the National Cup of the National Ice Hockey League in 2018 .

International

The Birbrajers national team jersey from the D-World Championship 2000 is exhibited in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

For the Israeli national team , Maxim Birbrajer played the men's D World Championships in 1997 , 1999 and 2000 . At the Division II World Cup in 2008 , the attacker made his competitive comeback for Team Israel after eight years. Also in 2013 he was on the ice for the Israelis in Division II. In 28 World Cup games so far, Birbrajer has scored a total of 20 goals and 28 assists .
