Steve Mason (born January 13, 1988 in Tilburg ) is a Dutch - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with EHC Winterthur in the Swiss League since 2019 .

Career

Clubs

Mason, son of the former Dutch-Canadian ice hockey player and today's coach Doug Mason , was born in Tilburg , where his father was storming for the Tilburg Trappers at the time . He began his career as an ice hockey player in the U18 team of the Krefeld EV when his father was training the Iserlohn Roosters in the DEL . After two years with KEV in the German Youth League , he moved to his parents' Canadian homeland. There he played in 2007/08 with the Nipawin Hawks in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and in 2008/09 with the Nanaimo Clippers in the British Columbia Hockey League . He then went to Oxford , Ohio , for four years , where he studied at the local Miami University and was active for the university team of the Miami RedHawks, with whom he won the championship title of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in 2010 and 2013 .

2013 returned Mason to Europe and played one year for the EHC Olten in the second-class Swiss National League B . In the 2014/15 season he stood for the first time in his hometown Tilburg for the local Trappers, with whom he immediately won both the Dutch championship and the cup competition , in the honor division . In November 2015, the attacker was signed by the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers from the National League B, where he is supposed to replace the long-term injured Reto Schmutz . In 2018 he won the league , now known as the Swiss League , and the Swiss Cup with the Lakers and rose with the club to the National League . At the end of September he was signed by EHC Winterthur after the injury-related loss of Luca Homberger for a month as reinforcement on the offensive.

In Switzerland it does not fall under the quota of foreigners.

International

For the Netherlands Mason took part in the Division II games of the U18 World Junior Championship in 2005 and 2006 . The center made its debut in the men's national team at the Division I tournament of the 2008 World Cup . During his university days in the USA he was not used in the national team, so that he was only on the ice again at the Division IB tournament of the 2013 World Cup for the Dutch. Also in 2014 , 2015 and 2017 he played for the Dutch in Division I.
