Staffan Kronwall (born September 10, 1982 in Järfälla ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who was active in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Calgary Flames , Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals . He also played for eight years for Lokomotive Yaroslavl in the Continental Hockey League and four years for Djurgårdens IF in the Elitserien . His older brother Niklas played for the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League for many years before retiring in 2019.
Career
Staffan Kronwall began his career as an ice hockey player in his Swedish homeland at Huddinge IK , before he was active for Djurgårdens IF in the Elitserien from 2002 to 2005 . He also played three times for their league rivals Brynäs IF in the 2004/05 season . Previously, the defender was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2002 in the ninth round as a total of 285th player by the Toronto Maple Leafs . Kronwall, who was under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2005 to 2008, was mainly used in their farm team , with the Toronto Marlies from the American Hockey League .
After Kronwall was active exclusively for the Marlies in the AHL in the 2008/09 season , he was signed on February 6, 2009 by the Washington Capitals . In the following years he was mostly in the farm team of the Capitals, the Hershey Bears , in the AHL.
In the summer of 2009 he was signed by the Calgary Flames , for which he completed eleven games in the NHL, but otherwise went on the ice at the Abbotsford Heat in the AHL. After he did not get a regular place in the NHL at the beginning of the 2010/11 season, he returned to Djurgårdens IF on October 12, 2010.
In April 2011 he was signed by Severstal Tscherepowez from the Continental Hockey League . A year later he moved within the KHL to Lokomotive Yaroslavl and played in the following eight game years - five of them as team captain - for this club. After the 2019/20 season, he ended his career after a total of more than 1,300 games.
International
For Sweden , Kronwall took part in the 2002 Junior World Championship . At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the national team and won the gold medal with it.
