Ri Pong-il (born September 29, 1988 ) is a North Korean ice hockey player .

Career

Ri Pong-il made his debut as a 16-year-old at the 2005 World Cup in Division II for the North Korean national team . In 2006 he was also on the ice for the East Asians in Division II. After the North Koreans boycotted the 2007 tournament , which was held in South Korea , they were demoted to Division III. In the lowest division of the World Cup, the defense around defender Ri only had to concede six goals in 2008 and managed to return undefeated to Division II, which then proved to be too strong: In 2009, against Israel (1: 2) and Iceland ( 2: 3) lost by only one goal difference, but in the end Ri and his team had five defeats from five games and thus relegation. So in 2010 a new attempt had to be made in Division III and again - this time with a 5-2 final victory over Armenia - the immediate promotion was achieved. But as in 2007, the North Koreans did not start at the 2011 World Cup . This time, not political, but financial reasons were decisive for Ris team. so it went back down to Division III. But now the men from the north of Korea failed each time because of the hosts: In 2012 it was only enough for second place behind Turkey , a year later the South Africans were stronger. Ri himself was named the best defender of the tournament in both years, in 2012 he also had the best plus / minus balance and was the best scorer among the defenders with seven points. Also in 2014 - now behind Bulgaria - it only reached second place, but Ri again had the best plus / minus balance. In 2015 , Ri made another attempt towards promotion with the North Koreans at the tournament in Izmir . This time, thanks to a 4-3 win after extra time against the host Turks, the leap into Division II, to which Ri made a significant contribution as again the best defender of the tournament and as the best player of his team. At the 2016 World Cup , his team managed to stay in Division II for the first time since 2005, so that he also played there in 2017 and 2018 .

He was also in his country's squad at the 2007 Asian Winter Games , in which the North Koreans finished fifth in a field of eleven teams. At club level, Ri plays for Taesongsan in the North Korean ice hockey league .
