Wassyl Polonyzkyj ( Ukrainian Василь Полоницький ; born February 28, 1977 in Kharkiv , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Ukrainian ice hockey player who played in the Belarusian extra league in addition to stints in Ukraine .

Career

Vasyl Polonyzkyj comes from the youth department of Druzhba-78 Kharkiv . He began his professional career with HK Sokil Kiev , for whom he played in the East European Hockey League . From 1998 to 2002 he played in the EEHL and partly in the Ukrainian ice hockey league at HK Berkut Kiev . During this time he was able to win the EEHL twice (2000 and 2001) and three times (2000, 2001 and 2002) the Ukrainian championship with the capital club. After Berkut had to stop playing in 2002 for financial reasons, the defender moved back to Sokil Kiev. With his new club he won four championships in a row from 2003 to 2006. After seven Ukrainian national championships in a row, he moved to Belarus to HK Vitebsk in 2006 , where he was used in the extra league. When there was no great success there, he moved to Metallurg Schlobin in the middle of the 2010/11 season , with whom he was able to win the Belarusian cup competition . But Polonyzkyj did not last long in Schlobin: During the 2011/12 season he went back to his hometown and joined the local HK Kharkivsky Akuly in the professional hockey league for the rest of the season . He then played another year at Dinamo Kharkiv before retiring in 2013.

International

In the junior division Polonyzkyj first played with the Ukrainian U18 selection at the European C Championship in 1995 and a year later took part in the U-20 World Cup , in which Ukraine played in the A group. After five losses from six games - only against the United States was won - but at the end of the tournament, relegation to the B group was certain.

Polonyzkyj made his debut in the men's national team , however, only in February 2005, when he took part in Klagenfurt in the second qualifying round for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . Although the Ukrainians won against the hosts 4: 3, two narrow defeats against Kazakhstan (1: 2) and France meant the end of all Olympic dreams. A year later, Polonyzkyj was also on the ice for the first time at a world championship for his colors and took twelfth place with the Ukrainians in the top division. After that, it took many years before he was again internationally appointed: Ukraine was no longer first class for a long time when the nomination for the qualifying tournaments for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi took place. The home tournament in the first qualifying round in Kiev in November 2012 was won by the Blue-Yellows with three clear wins, but in the second qualifying round, which was held in Vojens , Denmark , in February 2013 , they had no chance and were eliminated without points. Polonyzkyj was nevertheless also nominated for the 2013 World Cup and contributed to the return to the A group of Division I at the home tournament in Donetsk .
