Cameron Birrell (born August 13, 1990 in Pretoria ) is a South African ice hockey player who has been playing for the Pretoria Capitals in the Gauteng Province Hockey League since 2012 .

Career

Cameron Birell went to North America at the age of 18 and played there for two years with the Michigan Mountain Cats in the Great Lakes Junior B Hockey League. In 2010 he returned to South Africa and played for the Pretoria Warriors in the South African League. In 2011 he left his home again. This time he moved to Great Britain, where he was on the ice in the third-class English National Ice Hockey League first with the Oxford City Stars and then for the second team of the Cardiff Devils . But during the current season he returned to the Pretoria Warriors in his hometown. Since 2012 he has been under contract with the Pretoria Capitals in the Gauteng Province Hockey League .

International

Birrell was already on the ice at the U18 World Championships in 2006 , 2007 and 2008 and at the U20 World Cup in 2008 for his home country in Division III.

In the men's national team , he made his debut as a 16-year-old at the 2007 World Cup in Division III, when his team could only win against Mongolia , making it penultimate in this lowest level of the World Championships. A year later , with second place at the tournament in Luxembourg behind North Korea, they were promoted to Division II. But Birrell's team could not succeed there and had to relegate at the 2009 World Cup after a 2-0 defeat in the decisive game against Mexico . At the 2011 Division III World Cup , the South Africans were able to use their home advantage at the tournament in Cape Town and were promoted to Division II again in second behind Israel . Birrell contributed with four goals and six assists. But as in 2009, Division II turned out to be too big for Birrell's team in 2012 and so it went down again. The South Africans had meanwhile developed into a veritable elevator team, because the Division III tournament ended in 2013 with the repeated rise of the team from the Cape. At the 2014 World Cup , the South Africans were able to stay in Division II for the first time since 2003 and Birrell was voted the best player on his team. In 2015 he also played in Division II. After relegation there, he played again in Division III in 2016 and 2017 .
