Ilya Vladimirovich Nikulin ( Russian Илья Владимирович Никулин ; born March 12, 1982 in Moscow , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player .

Career

Ilya Nikulin started his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of HK Dynamo Moscow . For his second team he took part in the 1998/99 season in the second division, which was held once by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation and was initiated due to differences with the actual second Russian professional ice hockey division, the Wysschaya League . The following season the defender began at THK Tver in the Vysschaja Liga, for which he scored three goals in 39 games and provided six assists, before completing four more games for the second team of his home club Dynamo Moscow in the third-class Pervaya League towards the end of the season . Then he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 in the second round as a total of 31st player by the Atlanta Thrashers , for which he however never played. Instead, he stayed with Dynamo Moscow. In the following years he developed into a high performer in his professional team from the super league . In the 2004/05 season he was first Russian champion with Dynamo .

For the 2005/06 season Nikulin signed a contract with Ak Bars Kazan , with which he also won the Russian championship title at the end of the season. In the following season he reached the playoff final again with Kazan, but had to admit defeat in this to HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk . In the same season he was able to convince with Ak Bars on a European level. As last year's champion, he had qualified with Ak Bars for the IIHF European Champions Cup , in the final of which the Finnish participant HPK Hämeenlinna was clearly defeated 6-0. He himself was elected to the tournament's All-Star Team. Also in 2008 Nikulin was successful with Ak Bars in Europe and won the IIHF Continental Cup with his team . During this tournament he was named the best defender.

Since the 2008/09 season , Nikulin has been playing with Ak Bars Kazan in the newly founded Continental Hockey League . In the first season of the KHL, he increased to 43 scorer points, including nine goals, in 70 games, which meant a personal best for him. His achievements were honored with his appointment as KHL defender for October and March. He also took part in the first edition of the KHL All-Star Game . In the playoffs, the left shooter and his team won the first edition of the Gagarin Cup against Lokomotive Yaroslavl . He played a major role in this success and had the best plus / minus balance of all players with +13 in the playoffs . At the end of the season he was also elected to the KHL All-Star Team. In the following season he was able to win the Gagarin Cup again with Ak Bars after beating HK MWD Balaschicha in the final . As MVP of the playoffs, he played a big part in this success. Previously, he also took part in the second edition of the KHL All-Star Games and was named Defender of the Month for April.

In the 2010/11 season Nikulin was able to improve again and scored 40 scorer points in 49 games in the main round, including six goals. For this reason, too, the 2010 Olympian was invited to the All-Star Game again . In the Gagarin Cup playoffs, he failed in the second round with Ak Bars in the best-of-seven series with 1: 4 wins at Salawat Julajew Ufa . In his nine playoff appearances, he scored one goal and three assists in nine games.

In September 2015 he left Ak Bars after ten years and returned to his hometown club Dynamo Moscow. He played at Dynamo until the end of the 2018/19 season, after which he received no further contract extensions.

International

For Russia , Nikulin took part in the junior division in the U18 World Junior Championships in 1999 and 2000 . In the latter, he and his team won the silver medal. In the senior division, he joined the Russian national team in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 on the Euro Hockey Tour . He was also in his country's squad at the 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2009 and 2010 World Championships , as well as at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . Nikulin was particularly successful at the World Championships with Russia and won a medal in four of the five tournaments in which he participated - the bronze medal at the 2007 World Cup and the silver medal at the 2010 World Cup after a final defeat against the Czech Republic , as well as at the 2008 World Championships and in 2009 even the gold medal. At the 2010 Olympic Games, he and his team were eliminated in the quarter-finals against the host and eventual Olympic champion from Canada .
