Sakari Salminen (born May 31, 1988 in Pori ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with Porin Ässät in the Liiga since November 2017 .
Career
Salminen began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown Pori, where he played in the youth department of Porin Ässät . He went through numerous age groups of the club and was from the 2005/06 season parallel for the U18 and U20 selection on the ice. With the U18 team, he was runner-up that year.
In the 2007/08 season Salminen made his professional debut in the SM-liiga , where he completed 30 games for Porin Ässät in his rookie season and scored 13 points scorer. At the same time he scored 23 points in twelve games with the U20 team and was elected to the second All-Star team. In the play-offs he helped the team to win the runner-up in the Finnish A-Juniors.
After two more years with Porin Ässät in the SM-liiga, Salminen switched to league competitor KalPa in April 2010 . There he was able to improve his point yield and ended the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons with 45 and 47 points respectively as the team's top scorer. Also in the play-offs he was the player with the highest points on his team.
In the 2012/13 season Salminen managed to break the one point per game mark for the first time. With 55 points from 54 games, he was again the best scorer of his team and fourth best in the league. Then he was appointed to the all-star team of the SM-liiga.
In May 2013, the Finn moved to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the Continental Hockey League . In the 2013/14 season, including the playoffs, Salminen had 52 scorer points in 61 games (21 goals and 31 assists). With 47 points in 60 games for Nizhny Novgorod, Salminen was one of the KHL's 20 best point collectors in the 2014/15 season. He then moved to Friborg-Gottéron in Switzerland . In February 2016 he left Switzerland again and was signed by Växjö Lakers Hockey from Svenska Hockeyligan .
International
Sakari Salminen represented Finland for the first time at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2008 and scored four points in six appearances there.
At the 2013 World Cup in Finland he was part of the men's national team and scored three points in ten games.
